316L Stainless Steel for Jewelry: Everything You Need to Know
Partager
When looking for a personalized engraved piece of jewelry to wear every day, the choice of material is fundamental. Not for abstract technical reasons, but because the material determines whether your jewelry will still look beautiful in 5 years or if it will have tarnished, rusted, or caused allergic reactions after a few weeks.
316L stainless steel is the material we use across our entire collection. This guide explains why, and why it's the best choice for everyday jewelry.
What exactly is 316L stainless steel?
316L stainless steel is a metal alloy primarily composed of iron, chromium (16-18%), and nickel (10-14%), with a low carbon content, which is what the "L" stands for ("Low carbon").
What makes it special is the presence of molybdenum in its composition, an element that gives it exceptional resistance to corrosion, acids, and saltwater.
It's the exact same alloy used in surgery for medical implants, surgical instruments, and hospital equipment. Hence its other name: surgical steel. This is not a marketing ploy; it's a genuine indication of its quality and human body tolerance.
The 6 advantages of 316L stainless steel for jewelry
It doesn't tarnish or rust
This is the most important property for everyday jewelry. 316L stainless steel naturally forms a protective chromium oxide layer on its surface, invisible to the naked eye, which prevents any oxidation.
Result: your jewelry has the exact same shine after 5 years of daily wear as on the first day. No tarnishing, no rust, no discoloration.
It is truly water-resistant
Shower, pool, sea, perspiration – 316L stainless steel is not affected by water or humidity. It's one of the few jewelry materials that can be worn permanently without ever taking it off.
This is a significant advantage over gold-plated or sterling silver 925, which tarnish quickly on contact with water and need to be removed before each shower.
It is hypoallergenic
Jewelry allergies are caused in 90% of cases by the large amount of nickel present in cheap alloys. 316L stainless steel contains nickel in its composition, but in such a stable form and so well bonded to the alloy that it does not leach onto the skin.
Result: it is suitable for the most sensitive skin and for people who react to most jewelry. This is why it is used for medical implants; the human body tolerates it perfectly.
It is extremely scratch-resistant
316L stainless steel is much harder than gold, silver, or gold plating. It resists everyday scratches from contact with surfaces, rubbing against other jewelry, and light impacts.
A 316L steel piece of jewelry maintains its polish and smooth surface much longer than a piece made of precious metal.
It is ideal for laser engraving
Laser engraving on 316L stainless steel is sharp, precise, and permanent. The laser engraves the metal in depth, not on the surface like simple printing. The engraving does not fade with time, water, or wear.
This is why all our personalized jewelry is made of 316L steel to ensure an engraving that lasts as long as the jewelry itself.
It is lightweight and comfortable
Despite its strength, 316L stainless steel is lightweight; a pendant weighs between 2 and 5 grams depending on the model. You forget it's around your neck or on your wrist, which is exactly what you want from an everyday piece of jewelry.
316L stainless steel vs. other materials: an honest comparison
316L steel vs. gold plated
Gold plating is a metal (often brass or copper) covered with a thin layer of gold by electrolysis. This layer is between 0.5 and 2.5 microns thick, the thickness of a human hair.
Result: with time and wear, the gold layer flakes off and the base metal appears. The jewelry tarnishes, takes on greenish or reddish tints, and can cause allergies.
316L steel, on the other hand, is a homogeneous alloy throughout its thickness; there is no layer that can wear out.
Verdict: 316L steel lasts infinitely longer than gold plating for daily wear.
316L steel vs. sterling silver 925
Sterling silver 925 is composed of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals (often copper). It is a precious metal that has a beautiful natural patina, but it tarnishes quickly on contact with air, perspiration, and water.
Maintaining 925 silver jewelry is restrictive: it must be removed before showering, cleaned regularly with specific products, and stored in an anti-tarnish pouch.
316L steel requires no particular maintenance.
Verdict: For hassle-free everyday jewelry, 316L steel is more practical than 925 silver. For prestige or occasional jewelry, 925 silver retains a symbolic and aesthetic value that steel does not.
316L steel vs. solid gold
Solid gold (18K or 14K) is the noblest jewelry material: unalterable, hypoallergenic, resistant. But its price is incomparable: an 18K gold necklace costs between €200 and several thousand euros.
316L stainless steel offers similar mechanical properties at a fraction of the price, admittedly without the intrinsic value of gold, but with the same everyday durability.
Verdict: If budget is not a constraint, solid gold remains the ultimate choice. For an affordable everyday engraved piece of jewelry, 316L steel offers the best quality/durability/price ratio.
How to care for 316L stainless steel jewelry
The good news: maintaining 316L steel jewelry is minimal. Here are a few useful tips:
Occasional cleaning: rinse the jewelry under lukewarm water with a little mild soap, gently rub with a microfiber cloth, rinse, and dry. Once a month is enough for daily worn jewelry.
Storage: in its original pouch or case to avoid scratches from contact with other jewelry. This is not mandatory, just good practice.
What to avoid:
Harsh chemicals: bleach, acetone, household cleaners. They can damage the metal surface.
Ultrasonics: ultrasonic cleaners can damage laser engraving.
What NOT to avoid:
Showering, swimming pool, sea, sports, perspiration – 316L steel is designed for all of that.
Is 316L stainless steel really hypoallergenic? The honest answer
The question often arises: "steel contains nickel, how can it be hypoallergenic?"
Honest answer: 316L stainless steel does indeed contain nickel in its composition (about 10-14%). But the nickel is so strongly bound to the alloy that it does not leach onto the skin under normal wearing conditions.
The vast majority of people allergic to nickel wear 316L steel jewelry without any reaction. This is why it is used for medical implants and piercings.
However: in very rare cases, people with extreme hypersensitivity to nickel may react even to 316L steel. If you have a confirmed severe allergy, 18K solid gold or titanium are the only 100% nickel-free alternatives.
For 99% of people, 316L stainless steel is perfectly tolerated.
Why we chose 316L steel for our jewelry
At Une Passion à la Fois, all our personalized engraved jewelry is made of 316L stainless steel. This is not a default choice; it is a deliberate choice for several reasons:
Durability: an engraved piece of jewelry with an important name or date must last. Not a few months, but years, decades. 316L steel guarantees this.
Engraving: laser engraving on 316L steel is the sharpest and most durable available for affordable jewelry. It never fades.
Accessibility: a solid gold piece of jewelry with engraving would cost 5 to 10 times more. 316L steel allows us to offer quality jewelry at accessible prices without compromising on durability.
Inclusivity: 316L steel suits all skin types, all sensitivities, all budgets.

FAQ 316L stainless steel jewelry
Q: Is 316L stainless steel and surgical steel the same thing?
Yes. Surgical steel is the common name given to 316L stainless steel in the jewelry industry. Both refer to exactly the same alloy, the one used for medical implants and surgical instruments.
Q: Can stainless steel jewelry really be worn in the shower?
Yes. 316L stainless steel is perfectly resistant to water, steam, and ordinary soaps. You can wear it in the shower, pool, and sea without risk of tarnishing or degradation. This is one of its main advantages over gold-plated and sterling silver.
Q: Is the gold or rose gold color in 316L steel durable?
Yes. The gold or rose gold finish on our jewelry is achieved by a PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) technique, an industrial process that applies a deep coloration layer into the metal, much more resistant than simple plating. The color lasts several years of daily wear without fading.
Q: Can 316L stainless steel cause itching?
In the vast majority of cases, no. 316L steel is hypoallergenic and suitable for sensitive skin. However, if you have a medically diagnosed severe nickel allergy, consult a dermatologist before wearing any stainless steel jewelry.
Q: What is the difference between 304 steel and 316L steel?
304 steel is the common, cheaper version of stainless steel, but also less resistant to corrosion and saline environments. 316L steel contains additional molybdenum which gives it better long-term resistance. For everyday jewelry, 316L is consistently preferred over 304.
